Then vs Now: How Has Carp Fishing Changed Since You Started?

Whether you’ve been at it 5 years or 50, you’ve probably seen carp fishing evolve.

From bait tech and rigs to tackle trends and even lake pressure – what’s changed the most since you first picked up a rod?

And is it better… or worse?

I’d love to hear your thoughts – especially from the veterans on here. Let’s have a proper discussion on how far carp fishing’s come (or what we’ve lost along the way).

Share your reflections – and maybe a throwback photo or two if you’ve got ‘em

Carp fishing for me has changed massively since I started, and to be honest, I hate what it’s become. The modern-day scene feels more like a tech competition. Back then, it was all about reading the water, learning the craft, and putting in the hard yards to find and catch fish. Now, you’ve got drones scanning the lakes, bait boats delivering rigs with GPS accuracy, and people relying on gadgets rather than gut instinct.

It feels like the soul has been sucked out of it. The quiet solitude, the challenge, the satisfaction of working out a water and finally getting a result — that’s what made it special. These days, it’s more about instant gratification and showing off on social media than actually enjoying the process. Don’t get me wrong, innovation can be good, but when tech replaces skill, it stops being angling and becomes something else entirely. I really struggle to connect with the modern scene.
