David Gaskin had already had a season to remember on Cables Lake, landing two of the lakes A-team at 44 and 45lb back in November However, not one to rest on his laurels, David continued to grind it out over the winter eventually being rewarded on Friday when he netted this huge ‘plank of Mahogany’ - a welcome reward for his work!
David gave us the lowdown on how things panned out
“I’d made the decision to keep ploughing through the winter with 1 or 2 overnighters during the week and it was less than spectacular to say the least. However, with a few mild spells and the water temperature rising 4 degrees in the space of a week it was only a matter of time before the fish were waking up from their winter slumber.”
“A couple of weeks ago I started seeing some shows during the hours of darkness and it signalled the time for maximum effort. The fish were showing in a certain zone and unfortunately due to not being able to get to the lake until after work I couldn’t get where they were holding up.”
“The following week a cold weather snap meant the lake was devoid of anglers; with empty banks, a full moon and having a good idea of where the fish were, it was a good chance to pounce! I deployed 3 rods, spread amongst the zone and lightly baited with some Manilla. At 5.30am the middle rod stuttered and then burst into life… the fish felt heavy from the off and just as day was breaking it was slid over the net cord. The prize was a bulging plank of mahogany, a fish called Shoulders still sporting its winter colours and at a peak weight of 47lb”
Mega result David!
