As of February 2025, anglers in England are required to hold a valid rod fishing licence to fish legally in rivers, canals, and still waters. The Environment Agency has implemented incremental price increases over the past few years to support fisheries management and conservation efforts.
Current Rod Licence Fees:
-
Annual Licence:
-
From April 1, 2024, the cost for an annual two-rod coarse and non-migratory trout licence increased to £35.80.
-
From April 1, 2024, the cost for an annual three-rod coarse and non-migratory trout licence increased to £53.70.
-
This fee is set to rise to £36.60 from April 1, 2025.
-
-
Short-Term Licences:
- One-day licences are available, with prices ranging from £7.10 to £13.20, depending on the type of fishing.
-
Junior Licences:
- Anglers aged 13 to 16 can obtain a licence free of charge.
Changes in Licence Issuance:
In an effort to modernize and reduce costs, the Environment Agency has made significant changes to how licences are issued:
- Digital Licences:
-
Since January 16, 2023, rod licences are no longer sold at Post Offices. Anglers are encouraged to purchase licences online through the official GOV.UK website or via the Environment Agency’s telesales service.
-
From May 31, 2024, the traditional plastic-coated rod licence cards with illustrations have been discontinued. Anglers now receive their licences digitally via email or text message, or as an A4 letter upon request.
-
These changes aim to streamline the licensing process, reduce environmental impact, and ensure that more funds are directed towards fisheries improvement projects.
Enforcement and Compliance:
The Environment Agency conducts regular checks to ensure anglers comply with licensing requirements. Fishing without a valid licence can result in fines; for instance, an angler was recently fined £249 for fishing without a licence.
